Unit 54, Tennessee Infantry, Company B, became Unit 48 (Nixon's) Company G, Tennessee Infantry,
Misc. Note:  The Third Tennessee Infantry Regiment, Company K., was the only complete unit from Lawrence County to serve during the Civil War.
A large number of men went to Nashville to join that unit, but were foced by the battle that was underway to split up and join different units.
In late 1863, the Lawrence County courthouse was spared from being burned, only because the Union Army's Major Gibbon and his soldiers
feared that the Mexican War Monument, adjacent to the courhouse, would be damaged.  The last battle of the Civil War in Tennessee was in
December, 1864, at Sugar Creek - near Appleton -- in Lawrence County.

The above Elvira Barlow was listed as head of household, and the children's relationship to her is listed as shown.  Elvira's marital
status, however, is listed as Single (the space for Widowed was not chosen).  It appears that this Elvira may have been looking after
another family member's children, since it's unlikely that she would have had three out of wedlock, or was divorced from a Barlow husband.

In 1891, Tennessee established the 'Board of Pension Examiners' to determine if Confederate veterans applying for pensions were eligible.  Eligibility

requirements included an inability to support oneself, honorable separation from the service, and
residence in the state for one year prior to application.  Confederate veterans applied to the pension
board of the state in which they resided at the time of application, even if this was not the state from
which they served.  The application lists the veteran's place of enlistment, unit, period of service,
battles in which he participated, and whether he was wounded or captured.  Also included:  place of
birth, number and gender of children, and the value of personal and real property.

[1]
This information has been researched and presented by James Edward Goff.  His theory is that this William Barlow is the same person as William HENRY Barlow (see 1860 Census, Giles County).
[2]
A recent discovery in July, 2008 of the newspaper obituary for Williiam Henry Barlow tells us that the year of his birth was either 1822 or 1823.  He was believed to have been about 75 years old at the time of his death in March, 1897 in Brick Church, TN.

• Common belief has been that William Henry Barlow is the son of John Barlow
(b: 1794/95 - See Lawrence County listing), possibly by a 1st wife of John's.  And DNA testing shows that the two men were closely related.  However, there has been no documentation found so far that identifies their relationship -- whether it was father/son, uncle/nephew or cousins.  The research is ongoing.

Between 1860 and 1880, the Barlow surname was dropped and Barlar became the surname that was commonly used by William Henry and his male offspring.  An exception to this is the 1910 census record
(see on this page), when John Maultsby 'Doc' Barlow chose to list himself and his family by the original surname, not Barlar.

The full names of the individuals listed in 1860 are:
_William Henry Barlow
_Susan Frances (Phillips) Barlow
_Mary A. Barlow
(would later marry Will Ayres).
_
Lee Gusta Barlow (would later marry Johnnie Lee Rutledge).
_
Alfred J. Barlow (would later marry (1st) Frances Lawhorn, (2nd) Martha Hollingsworth).
_
Ann J. 'Annie' Barlow (would later marry John Vick).

[3]
Current records indicate that the death of John Barlow (b: 1794/95) occurred between 1860 and 1870.
  Elvira
(maiden name unknown) is believed to have been his 2nd wife.
The date of their marriage is not known, however, current estimates are that it was at least prior to 1837/38.
See 1870 Census information for additional listings for this family.
[4]
A connection between the Barlow / Gordon surnames (see Manerva Barlow) is established through Wm. W. Barlow, as follows:  twenty years later -- in the 1880 Giles County census -- W.W. Barlow (age 20, boarder, attending school) is listed under the David A. Gordon household.
[5]
Manerva Barlow's maiden name is believed to have been Gordon.  (In the 1850 Census - Lawrence County, Manerva Gordon was the only 'Manerva' listed).
In this 1860 census record, she was listed as living one house away from John Barlow (b: 1794/95).  How they were related has not been clearly established.
Her husband has not yet been identified.
See Elizabeth J. Barlow under John Barlow household, 1850 census.
A connection between the Gordon and Barlow surnames has been established.  (See Barlow, Wm. W., detail
3).
[6]
Charles P. Barlow is believed to have been the son of John Barlow (b: 1794/95)and Elvira.
They lived one house away from each other at the time this census was taken
(June 26, 1860), and the given name of Elvira was passed along to Charles' daughter.
Charles P. Barlow and his family appeared in the next census year 1870 - Giles County, TN - Campbellsville.
The date of Charles' marriage to Eliza was January 13th, 1858.
Records indicate that the maiden name of his wife, Eliza, was also Barlow.  Until additional information can prove otherwise, it is currently assumed that Charles and Eliza were cousins.
[7]
These two children are listed under the John Osburn household (John Osburn's birth place listed as NC).
It appears that Mary (E.) Barlow and Wm. J. Barlow are brother and sister, although further information is needed before that can be established as fact.
Although they lived two houses away from the elder John Barlow
(b: 1794/95) and Elvira at the time of this 1860 census, their relationship, if any, has yet to be established.
It appears that Mary E. Barlow married Marion W. White.
SEE: 1863-1870 Tennessee Marriages.
It's assumed that Mary could read and write, since there was no indication to the contrary.  Neither child had attended school during the year.
[8]
Records indicate that this John S. Barlow is the same John Barlow (b: 1841) as listed in the 1850, 1860, 1900 and 1910 census reports.
Why this individual was listed as J.S. Barl
er in the 1911 pension application is not yet known.
There is ongoing research of John S. Barlow (J.S. Barler), in hopes of finding an explanation for the inconsistent data.
[9]
These 4 individuals are listed under the John Johnson household in Pulaski.
  Elenor
(Eleanor?) appears to have been the daughter of John & Synthia (Cynthia) Johnson.
(See 1863 - 1870 Tennessee Marriages).  Although it seems reasonable to assume that this is the same Eleanor Johnson listed as marrying John L. Barlow in 1865, it has not yet been fully established as fact.
[10]
Charles P. Barlow is  believed to be the son of John Barlow (b: 1794/95) and Elvira Barlow.
In the previous census (1860) Charles was listed as head of his own household, living one house away from the elder John Barlow and Elvira.
In the previous census (1860), he was listed as being unable to read and write; however, in 1870, he was listed as being able to do both.
[11]
In the 1860 Census - Lawrence County, Jasper N. Barlow is listed under John Barlow (b: 1794/95),  and appears to be John's and Elvira's son.
The maiden name of Jasper's wife, Sarah, is not yet known.
[12]
Elvira Barlow was the wife (believed to have been the 2nd wife) of John Barlow (b: 1794/95) and is listed in the 1860 Census - Lawrence County under his household.  (Her husband's death is broadly estimated to have occurred between 1860-1870).
To date, there has been no additional record found for this Elvira Barlow
(b: 1814/15), and it is assumed that her death would have occurred sometime between this 1870 census, and the next census year of 1880.
The relationship between Mattie G. Barlow
(age 8) and Elvira (age 56) has not been clearly established.
[13]
Despite the inconsistencies in the ages and his father's birth place, it appears that this Lee G. is the son (2nd born) of William Henry and Susan Frances (Phillips) Barlow/Barlar.
The original document of the 1880 Census report is somewhat difficult to read; however the surname listed for Lee G., appears to be Barlow - not Barlar.  Why he would have chosen to forego listing himself by the Barlar surname that had been adopted by William Henry, is unclear at this point.
Lee was staying with J.J. Phillips
(who was a member of his mother's family and worked as the County Registrar) and appeared to be going to school in Pulaski.
Lee would later marry Johnnie Lee Rutledge, but was single at the time of this census report.
[14]
Despite the inconsistency in birth dates, it's possible that this Elvira is the same person as shown in Lawrence County - 1860 under John Barlow (b: 1794/95), and under the elder Elvira Barlow in Giles County - 1870.  It is less likely that she is the Elvira Barlow listed as the daughter of Charles P. Barlow, since there is an even broader age difference.
In this census, Elvira was listed as being able to read, but not write.
The true parentage of the 3 children listed here has not been established.

[15]
• Full Names:
Alfred Jordan (Barlow) Barlar
(3rd-born of William Henry and Susan Frances (Phillips)
Frances (Lawhorn)
(1st wife)
Cornelius Brown Barlar
Alfred and Frances would eventually have 4 more children.
[16]
See 1900 Census listing for John S. Barlow's granddaughter, Rosa Barler.  To date, this listing for James T. Barler is the only other recorded listing for the surname Barler.  The names of James' parents have not been determined.
[17]
In the 1860 Census, William Henry and his family were listed as Barlow.  At some point in the twenty years been 1860 and this 1880 Census, the Barlow surname was replaced by Barlar.
An exception to the usage of Barlar was in the 1910 Census record.  See John M. Barlow.
Full names of the individuals listed in 1880 are:
William Henry Barlar
Susan Frances (Phillips) Barlar
Lee Gusta Barlar
Ann J. 'Annie' Barlar
John Maultsby 'Doc' Barlar
Nathan Thomas Barlar
Pinkney Fields 'Pink' Barlar
Jeptha 'Smith' Barlar
James Monroe 'Jim' Barlar.
[18]
John Maultsby 'Doc' Barlow was the 5th-born of William Henry Barlow & Susan Frances (Phillips) Barlow.  (See: 1860 census report for William Barlow).
Between 1860 and 1880 William Henry's surname was replaced by Barlar, which became commonly used by most of his male children.
In this 1900 listing 'Doc' has listed himself and his family as Barlar.
In the 1910 listing, he apparently chose to use the original name, Barlow.
In this 1900 listing, he was renting his home in Enumeration District 28.
In the 1910 listing, he was living in Enumeration District 31, and owned his home and farm.
The full names of 'Doc's' family are:
Zana Lou (Coker) Barlow
Walcie Rowena Barlow (later married Robert 'Shirley' Carpenter)
Allen 'Eugene' Barlow (later married Beulah Adams)
Florence 'Roberta' Barlow (later married Claude Alvin Waldrop)
Erin (listed elsewhere as Era Gertrude) died between 1900 and 1910.
[19]
  Full name:  Cornelius Brown Barlar (b: 1879 - d: 1959).
1st born of Alfred Jordan Barlow (Barlar) and Frances Lawhorn
(1st wife).
Cornelius would later marry Hettie Louisa Ingram.  He was still single at the time of this 1900 Census report.
[20]
Records indicate that this John S. Barlow (b: 1941) is the same John S. Barlow (b: 1941) of Lawrence Co., who served on the side of the Confederacy in the Civil War.
  This John
S. Barlow's stated date of birth has remained consistent as (1841).
In this 1900 census, the date of marriage calculates to 1874.
(In the 1910 census, it calculates to 1871.)
In this 1900 census, it is established that John S. Barlow fathered 9 children.  5 are listed here, 3 are not listed here, 1 is deceased.
  Rosa Barler
(age 5), is likely to have been the daughter of Sallie J. Barlow (or Barler).  (See: 1910 listings).
If Sallie J. Barlow had married a Barl
er, it would explain why Rosa is listed as a Barler in this 1900 census; otherwise it's unclear as to why there is a difference in the surnames.
It's unclear as to who Rosa's father was and where her parents were at the time this census was taken (June 7, 1900).
[21]
Full Name:  James Monroe 'Jim' (Barlow) Barlar.
9th born of William Henry Barlow and Susan Frances (Phillips).
'Jim' would later marry Nellie Kate Pinkston, but was still single at the time of this census report.
In this census, he lived next door to his older brother, Nathan Thomas (Barlow) Barlar.
Both 'Jim' and Nathan were using the adopted surname of Barlar at the time of this census..
[22]
  Full name:
Nathan Thomas (Barlow) Barlar
(6th born of William Henry and Susan Frances (Phillips).
Between 1900 and 1910 Nathan's moved to the town of Lynnville, District 15, and his occupation changed from farmer to grocery store owner.
At the time of this 1900 report, Nathan and his younger brother, James Monroe 'Jim', were living next door to each other; and both chose to list themselves as Barlar
(the surname adopted by their father sometime between 1860/1880) instead of the original Barlow.
[23]
The names of the Barlar parents of these two children have not been established.
Blanche W. Gordon appears to be married to W.J. Gordon.
The facts of this listing are not clear.
[24]
The identity of this Claud Barlar has not yet been established.
[25]
Nathan Thomas (Barlow) Barlar was the 6th born of William Henry and Susan
Frances (Phillips).
  Full Names of his family:
Martha A. 'Mattie' (Taylor) Barlar
Birdie Brown Barlar
(would later marry J. Dan Goforth)
Mary Golie Barlar
(would later marry (1st) 'Doc' Grissom)
Nathan's Store was located on Main Street North in the town of Lynnville, TN
[26]
John Maultsby 'Doc' Barlow was the 5th-born of William Henry Barlow & Susan Frances (Phillips) Barlow.  (See: 1860 census report for William Barlow).
Between 1860 and 1880 William Henry's surname was replaced by Barlar, which became commonly used by most of his male children.  However, in this 1910 Census, John Maultsby apparently chose not to list himself and his family by the adopted surname of Barlar, using instead, the original name, Barlow.
The full names of 'Doc's' family are:
Zana Lou (Coker) Barlow
Walcie Rowena Barlow
(later married Robert 'Shirley' Carpenter)
Allen 'Eugene' Barlow (later married Beulah Adams)
Florence 'Roberta' Barlow (later married Claude Alvin Waldrop)
Elzie Clyde Barlow (later married Donna McBride)
Ruby Odelene Barlow (remained unmarried).
[27]
In the 1900 Census, John S. Barlow (b: 1841)  lived in District 30, but had moved to District 31 by the time of the 1910 Census, taken (April 18th & 19th, 1910).
In this 1910 Census, the date of marriage calculates to 1871.
(In the 1900 Census, it calculates to 1874).
By the time of this 1910 Census, only 4 of his 9 children were still living.
Sallie J. Barlow is listed as John S. Barlow's daughter.  It is highly likely that the two granddaughters, Rosa and Viola were Sallie J. Barlow's daughters.
Rosa's surname was listed in the 1900 census as Barl
er.  (The entry appears to have been deliberate as opposed to an error).   Why Rosa was listed as Barler in that census would only make sense if Sallie J. Barlow had married a Barler.
Why there is an inconsistency between the Barlow / Barler surnames remains unclear.
In this 1910 census report, there is a slight inconsistency in the birth date for Josie C.  In the 1900 census, her birth date was stated as Aug, 1856.  In the 1910 census, the age she stated calculates to 1854.
[28]
The relationship of these two Barlar individuals to the Jackson household is as shown.
This Blanche Barlar appears to be the same person as Blanche W. Gordon in the 1900 Census listing; however, in that year, she appeared to be married to W.J. Gordon.

Despite the inconsistency in the surnames (Barlow vs. Barler), it is thought that this J. S. Barler is the same individual as John S. Barlow (b: 1841).  (See 1861 Tennessee Confederate Soldiers - 1900 Census - 1910 Census).
There is an established connection between the Barlow and Barler surnames.
(See: 1900 census report - John S. Barlow's granddaughter, Rosa Barler, however, the facts for why Barler was ever used have not been determined.
  J. S. Barler (Barlow) is believed to have died in 1911.
