The second-born of William Henry Barlow
and Susan Frances Phillips, Lee is believed to have been instrumental
in changing the family's surname from Barlow to Barlar. Both Lee
and his wife, Johnnie Lee Rutledge, were school teachers. They
had no children of their own.
